Matt Archer grew up in and around the Fresno, CA area. He started out on the show circuit in the children's hunter ring and gradually moved over to the jumper ring. Over the years he worked with Bob Walker and Butch and Lu Thomas. More recently he has spent time working with Leslie Burr Howard, Lise Quintero and Buddy Brown.
During the summer of 2003, Matt travelled to Europe to work at the sale barn of Alan Waldman and Egbert Schep. While he was there he learned countless skills. He was exposed not only to the European methods of training horses, but to their methods of selling horses as well.
Recently Matt has imported a few young jumpers from Holland to promote the "Young Jumper" division in Northern California. And he is an avid believer in the Young Jumper program that helps to promote the development of high quality young jumpers right here in the United States
This past year, 2011, Matt competed with two horses in the Young Jumper Suitability Finals at the Sacrameno International Horse Show. Matt was Champion 4Year Old on his catch ride, WT Lawry, sired by Lio Caylon and regularly trained by Dick and Ruth Widger. And Matt was Reserve Champion 4 Year Old and Best Overall Young Horse (ages 4-7) on Clicquot, sired by Judgement. Clicquot is a 4 Year Old that was brought to us in March of 2011 with basic training under saddle. And after showing at just one horse show, Matt piloted him to the highest honors of the Young Jumper Suitability Finals.
In addition, Matt finished 10th in the 7/8 Year Old YJC Finals at Showpark on Kendall Jordan's Lansing. Lansing finished up the year with Matt competing in the $25,000 ProEquest Grand Prix during both weeks of the Sacramento International Horse Show. Week one was Lansing's first Grand Prix and he finished with 4 faults. Week two Lansing finished 12th out of 45 with a score of 2 time faults.
In 2012, Matt won the West Coast Young Jumper Championship for 5 Year Olds on Cotillion, owned by Emma Mann-Meginniss. Cotillion was purchased by Emma under the guidance of Matt and Lindsay through Neil Jones in the Fall of 2011.
When Matt isn't at the ring riding or teaching, he spends time shipping horses. Whether it be hauling horses from LAX to quarantine, or hauling horses to horse shows, Matt can be found doing it all...
